Current Events- 4 Basic Ingredients

To be media-literate, it's important to recognize the four major ingredients in news coverage:
  1. Information- This refers to the newest details about an event or subject, it's the news that's new.
    Information is usually in the headline or teaser and in the first few sentences (the "lead-paragraph").
  2. Background- This is older relevant information that puts the new information into context. Readers/listeners/viewers can use background-information to make sense of the news. By connecting or contrasting previous related events to current events, we can understand them better.
    Reporters usually offer background-information in the second or third paragraph of a story. Sometimes background is provided with information-graphics like graphs and timelines. Websites usually provide links to older stories that relate to the current news.
